Reader’s Question:

I bought my darling daughter her first car for her birthday. Can anyone here tell me how I can get the cheapest teen car insurance available here in Alabama?

Greta

Birmingham, AL

Your daughter is surely going to have one heck of a shock when she sees this sweet gift of yours. I do not want to spoil the party, but you will also be shocked when you see the prices of teen car insurance there in Alabama.

Like in all states nationwide, first time drivers are viewed as high-risk drivers, and car insurance companies are only too wary to insure them. You may ask why. It is because teen drivers get into more accidents, and in most of these accidents, the teen drivers are at fault. So, you really cannot blame the car insurance companies because they are just trying to be wise with their money.

However, even if this is the case, it does not spell doomsday for your finances. Because I tell you there are ways to lower what you are going to pay for the car insurance of your darling daughter.

Now, just pay attention and take note of everything that I am going to say next.

First, you should include your daughter in your car insurance policy if you already have an existing one. Having multiple drivers in an existing policy makes you eligible for some discounts.

After doing this, proving to the car insurance companies there in Alabama that your daughter is a responsible motorist and would not likely be in a car accident is the next thing you do. How do you do this? You do this by enrolling her in a basic driving course or a defensive driving course, which are available in some high schools and some private institutions. Just ask around there in your city. Your daughter having good grades in school may also be used as proof.
One of the best ways to lower your annual premiums is to have a higher deductible amount.. Like a $1,000, is what I carry personally.

Now, if you are a claim free and safe driver like I am, you could be saving a ton of money each year on your premiums.  People fail to realize that the deductible amount is only paid when they file a claim and their insurance company pays that claim.

Ask for discounts, you never know what you might be able to get and how much you can save by asking.  Some popular discounts can be given for:

1. Military personnel

2. Good grade students

3. Union membership and bank member affiliations

4. Safe drivers with no claims in last 7 years

5. Defensive driving school attendance

6. Clean credit history – used by many carriers to determine payment risk

So, if you are successful in doing all of these, the result will surely be the cheapest car insurance for your teen daughter.

Good luck!

Is a New Driver Covered On Parents Auto Insurance Policy

Reader’s Question:

How long is a new driver covered under their parents auto insurance policy after they get their drivers license? They have insurance in Alabama.

Dan

Tanner-Williams, AL

A new driver may not be automatically covered under their parent’s policy after they obtain their license.

In order to be covered, you have to be listed on the insurance policy declaration page. That means the insurance policy holder contacted the insurance provider and had the motorist endorsed onto the insurance policy. Some auto insurance policies do cover a motorist on a restricted license, but once an operator’s license is acquired they should be added to the insurance policy.

If you are listed on your parent’s policy, you should be covered on that insurance policy until you are endorsed or removed from the policy. I suggest that you contact your parent’s insurance company to know if you are included on the insurance policy and if anything needs to be done to remove you from the policy. If you reside in the household in ,Tanner-Williams, AL it is likely that you should remain listed or excluded from the policy.

How Old Do I Have To Be To Get Auto Insurance Policy

Reader’s Question:

How old do I have to be to obtain my own auto insurance policy? I am only 18 years old and I live in Mobile, Alabama. Thank you.

Jean

Mobile, AL

According to the Alabama Department of Revenue Alabama law does not provide for a minimum age requirement to own an automobile so if there is no age restriction on owning or registering a car then their should not be one for obtaining auto insurance.

Even without a state law restricting you from buying auto insurance you are likely to have extra steps to take in order to get car insurance if you are are a teenager under 18 and thus still considered a minor. For registration, normally, financing and legal documents or insurance contracts will be signed and if you are a minor and usually they will require you to have a parent or guardian sign on the forms with you.

Insurance carrier guidelines can differ for a teenage driver so you may need to shop around for coverage however you should be able to get Mobile Alabama auto insurance for a vehicle you own at age 18.

What is The Minimum Age To Register A Vehicle In Alabama

Reader’s Question:

I purchased a car for my teen son and I just want to know if it can be registered under his name? What is the minimum age requirement for registering vehicles? I live in Alabama.

Samantha

Thank you for asking Samantha.

Generally, a juvenile cannot go into a contract therefore it is less possible that an individual can be a sole owner of a motor vehicle. Normally a minor cannot own property until he/she turns 18 and become an adult. The minor’s parents technically own the property in most cases. For instance if a parent will co-sign on a loan for a vehicle, the juvenile can purchase a vehicle, but the parent will still be the legal owner.

Those states that will allow a minor to register a vehicle normally will require a parent or guardian to sign on any legal documents or contracts since they are still a minor.

Theres no information in the Alabama driver manual that state age restrictions on a person who wants to register a car in their name. To get more information on the minimum age requirement for car ownership in Alabama you will need to contact the AL Motor Vehicle Division.

Goodluck!

Cheap DUI SR22 Auto Insurance For Teen Drivers

Q: I want to get my teenager a new car. I have a DUI on my record. How can I get the cheapest sr22 insurance for the both of us?

A: Well, if I were you I would stay away from getting a teenager a brand new car, even if you’re not looking at it from the perspective that there’s no way you’re going to get the cheapestsr22 with a new car. However, even if that doesn’t worry you, the cost of insurance for brand new cars will. Remember that if you have to make payments on a car, your financer will require you to have collision and comprehensive car insurance coverage, which will make your rates rise. Your rates will also rise because a new car is more expensive to repair and replace.

When looking for a car with the cheapestsr22 insurance rates for a teenager, you should be checking out used cars instead. Not just some thirty year old piece of junk, but maybe a car that’s around five to eight years old. Something from early in the century, I would say. You might also consider a pre owned car, because these are usually of the same quality but lower prices than a brand new car. Make sure that for a teenager you get a mid sized car and a car which has good safety ratings. Safety ratings for teens is extremely important.

What Does SR22 Insurance Cost For College Students

Q: What’s SR22 insurance cost like for college graduates?

A: Well, you have a bunch of factors working in your favor if you recently graduated from college, even if you no longer get your good student discount. First of all, you’re getting close to an age where you will be considered less of a risk, which is great. Better yet, though, is that in some cases you can use your degree from college to get cheaper car insurance premiums.

Some companies, like 21st Century insurance, provide discounts for college graduates who have degrees in engineering or math related degrees. For example, if you have a degree in nautical engineering, microbiology, or statistics, you may be able to pay less money for your policy since, as scientist or mathematician, car insurance companies think you’re more responsible and pay more attention to detail.

Other companies offer discounts on your SR22 insurance for people who join a teacher’s union. Now, you probably will pay as much in member fees as you will save from the discount, but it’s still nice in a way because you’re pretty much getting free union membership, which will help you in a lot of ways.
