Q: How much coverage do I need in order to maintain Sr22 Financial responsibility?
A: As a driver who needs Sr22 Financial responsibility, you have to have at least the minimum liability coverage which the state of Alabama requires of all drivers. While you can have more than this coverage, if you have less you will not qualify to reinstate your driver’s license. Here are the minimum coverage requirements:
- you need to have $40,000 of personal injury liability coverage which will apply to the injury or death of all persons in a single accident
- you need to have $20,000 of personal injury liability coverage which will apply to the injury or death of each person in a single accident
- you need to have $10,000 property damage liability coverage, which will apply to any damage caused to other cars or other types of property
Car insurance companies say you should get more than that, because damages and especially medical bills are very expensive. Now, those coverages only apply for any damages or injuries you cause with your own vehicle to someone else or their property. If you damage your own vehicle, even if you run into one of your cars with another of your cars, then liability insurance does not cover it.
